Musina Municipality recognised for paying their debt

The Musina Municipality received recognition, for the second year in a row, from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) for settling their Eskom historical debt. This occurred during the seventh Limpopo SALGA Awards held in Polokwane last Tuesday.

The first award for settling this debt was presented to the municipality by representatives of Eskom in August last year. Musina Municipality was the only municipality honoured in this category.

Besides the special award, Musina Municipality also scooped up two more awards during the ceremony. These awards include achieving an unqualified audit opinion and most improved audit performance for the 2022/2023 financial year.

Although the primary award was for settling the Eskom historical debt, Musina Mayor Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela said the fact that the municipality had won three awards during the ceremony was encouraging. He said it took hard work and dedication to elevate the municipality to a higher level. “We had to sacrifice a lot of things to ensure that the Eskom debt is settled because it was a thorn in the flesh and a stumbling block for us to deliver efficient service to our people out there. Our goal was to ensure that the debt is settled, and this second recognition award will also encourage other municipalities to follow suit.”

He added that the unqualified audit opinion award demonstrated that the governance structures of the municipality were functional. “Having been awarded the unqualified audit opinion award will definitely drive us to set our sights on a clean audit, and we are very sure that we can achieve it. The most improved audit performance award is an indication that we are moving in the right direction to build Musina into one of the best local government entities in Limpopo.”
