Mr Stephan Gaigher from Louis Trichardt, writes:

They are not easy to recognise. Unlike their celluloid counterparts, they do not yearn for spandex and cloaks in monogrammed colour. They do not fly, flash or thunder. Neither do they wield enchanted swords or hammers or have access to the Stark Foundation hoards. If they had, this letter would not have been written.

They do, however, share many characteristics with the Marvel gang. They defend the weak, speak for those who cannot, fight for those who are unable. They are like the Dark Knight: a silent guardian, a watchful protector.

Don’t comb the skies for a searchlight logo if you want to find these heroes. Look for a plain black shirt with a simple white logo. You will most likely find them in green or white gumboots. Where? Look for them early in the morning, late at night in the freezing cold, pouring rain or punishing heat. They are the ones standing on the front lines, defiantly saying: “They will not be hurt! They will NOT suffer and be lonely or hungry. Not on MY watch, not while I have strength in my body…!” They are the members of that most exceptional organisation … the SPCA, and for the furred society who look up to them for protection, they truly are superheroes.

Their kryptonite is indifference - the one substance that can break them, bringing even these superhumans to their knees. So, the next time you hear their battle cry for right to prevail, don’t turn away, don’t leave it on their shoulders. They are as strong as you make them. They have sacrificed much at the altar of unrequited service, more than most will ever know. Now is the time to support them!

In the words of Commissioner James Gordon: “You’re going to make a difference. A lot of times it won’t be huge, it won’t be visible even. But it will matter just the same…” (The Dark Knight).
