A suspected rapist had the tables turned on himself last Wednesday when his victim started fighting back. He ended up in hospital after another person arrived at the scene and knocked him on the head with a stone.

A 41-year-old woman from Dzanani (Biaba) in Nzhelele described to Zoutpansberger this week how she battled with the man who allegedly attempted to rape her. She was on her way to her place of work in the early morning hours when the man approached her. She explained that she works at an electrical installation project and needs to be there early in the morning. On her way to work, she passes through some bushes near Tshirolwe village.

The sun had just started to rise when the alleged rapist approached her with a knife in his hand. He threatened to stab the woman if she did not follow his instructions. According to the lady, the man told her that he wanted to rape her and instructed her to go into the bushes. “I asked him why, even though he wanted to rape me, he should be that violent, but he insisted that if I did not follow his instructions he would kill me,” she said.

The man then ordered his victim to undress and stand in a position that would assist him to commit the evil deed. The woman, however, opted to wait for a suitable opportunity and fight back. She managed to push the knife away from the man when he started to pull down his pants. She then grabbed him by the testicles while simultaneously screaming for help. “I shouted for help and continued to pull him, hoping someone would see us and call the police,” she said.

A man who was passing by heard the screams and rushed to the woman's assistance. From what could be gathered, he took a stone and hit the alleged rapist on his head. He then called the police, who arrived shortly afterwards and made an arrest.

The suspect was charged with an attempted rape but was initially admitted to Siloam hospital as a result of the injuries he suffered during the incident. On Saturday, he was transferred to the Polokwane provincial hospital, since his condition had worsened.

The police confirmed the incident and said a 37-year-old suspect was in custody. “He is behind bars. He was released from hospital and he is also facing other charges,” said Mphephu police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati. According to Netshidzati, the man immediately admitted to the police that he had wanted to rape the woman.
