Reggae artist threatens to sue taxi driver

Date: 28 June 2002 By: Ndivhuwo Musetha

THOHOYANDOU - A well-known reggae artist in the Far North is considering suing a taxi driver, who assaulted him during a Black Leopards/Ria Stars game at the Thohoyandou Stadium early this year.

Khakhathi "Zwimanzhozini" Tshisikule revealed this last Thursday, immediately after Philip Malise was fined R1 200 or four months imprisonment by the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court for assault.

Malise pleaded guilty in court and said he failed to control himself during the incident. The two were arguing about who should be replaced in the dying minutes of the game. Malise then stood up from his seat and punched Tshisikule in the face.

The two initially agreed to settle the matter out of court, provided Malise would pay for all medical expenses for Tshisikule. He had sustained a cut in the mouth, as well as a swollen face.

The matter was reported to the police after Philip, who had paid R150 for some of medical expenses for Tshisikule, refused to pay R1 000 in cash, which was the loss suffered by Tshisikule after he had to cancel a show because of the injury.

Tshisikule said he would decide if he was going to sue Malise for damages he had suffered as an artist and to his image. "Before, I was trying to be sympathetic to this man. I did not look about the damage caused to me as an artist. People who heard about this incident might think I provoked this guy. A normal-thinking person might think there is no way I can be assaulted without doing anything wrong. As such, people might think I am a troublesome person," said Tshisikule.
