Early and cold start to second Soutpansberg Marathon

An early start waited on Saturday, 18 June, for participants taking part in the second annual Soutpansberg Mountain Marathon as part of the Mountain Marathon Series, hosted by KZN Trail Running.

Hosted in conjunction with the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), the event started and finished at the Schoemansdal Environmental Education Centre. This year’s top three finishers in the 40km mountain marathon event were Cornelius Rall in first place, Gary Calitz in second and Jeofrey Mashau third. The first woman home was Christili Muller, followed by Chana-Lee Preston and Jolanda Roux third.

As for the mountain challenge event over 23km, first to cross the finish line was Hennie Niekerk, with Tharollo Mthisi second and Khathutshelo Mukhumeni third. The first lady home was Debbie Blount, followed by Nancy Barber and Dawn Booyens.

Andries van Zyl

Andries joined the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror in April 1993 as a darkroom assistant. Within a couple of months he moved over to the production side of the newspaper and eventually doubled as a reporter. In 1995 he left the newspaper group and travelled overseas for a couple of months. In 1996, Andries rejoined the Zoutpansberger as a reporter. In August 2002, he was appointed as News Editor of the Zoutpansberger, a position he holds until today.
