Sunny but cold, windy conditions provided perfect conditions for the U/14 junior international polocrosse tournament final between South Africa and Zambia.

The tournament, which was hosted at the Paddock Polocrosse Club between 4 and 6 August, saw a fairly young and inexperienced South African team being emphatically beaten by the older, more experienced Zambians. Included in the South African team was Jamin Schuch from Louis Trichardt’s Limpopo Crusaders Polocrosse Club. The test results were Zambia 18 – South Africa 15 (day 1), Zambia 20 – South Africa 16 (day two) and Zambia 27 – South Africa 13 (day three)

South African captain Jake Shaw was injured during the second match on Saturday but continued playing despite his injuries.

The Golden Pony award went to Cupcake, owned by South African Lauren Heynes. Heynes (10), the youngest player in the tournament, also won the award for the Best Girl Player.

Twelve-year-old Zambian Daniel Mawson won the Best Boy Player award. He also won both the best number 1 position and the best number 3 position. Amorette du Toit of Zambia won the best number 2 position.

“I think the Zambians were just that much older than us. Team South Africa was a fairly young team, but our kids did well. It was a great weekend overall and we look forward to playing this type of tournament annually,” said Sam Heynes, junior president of Polocrosse South Africa.

“It’s the first time that our club hosted an international tournament. We look forward to hosting more international matches in the near future,” said Ryan Pretorius of the Paddock Polocrosse Club. He also congratulated the Zambians on their victory and both teams on their great effort and skill.
