Vikings outplays Limpopo in final

Date: 18 August 2017 By: Anton van Zyl

The Werda Toyota Vikings team outplayed the Limpopo Dairy team on Sunday to win the final match in the Limpopo Dairy 18/18 league.

Limpopo batted first, but got off to a disastrous start when they lost their two star batsmen, Chris-Jan Hendriks (0) and Leon Olwage (6), within the first two overs. AJ Fourie (10) and Juan Phillips (9) tried to recover, but the Vikings bowlers were lethal. Gerrie Oelofse (12) and Wouter Smit (23) helped to take the score to 89, but the last wicket fell in the 15th over.

Morne Olwage (3/16 in 3 overs) and Leon Furstenburg (3/18 in 3 overs) did most of the damage for Vikings. Craig Viljoen also took 2/12 in his two overs.

The Werda Toyota Vikings were under no pressure when chasing the score. The opening pair, Craig Viljoen (25) and Morne Olwage (37 not out) put up a 51 partnership for the first wicket. Leon Furstenburg (14 not out) helped take the score to 90 in the 15th over, with three wickets down

Only Wouter Smit (2/12 in three overs) could take two wickets or more for Limpopo Dairy.

After Sunday’s match, the statistics were also made available for the individual performances throughout the league. The top batsman was Craig Viljoen who scored 181 runs in three innings at an average of 60,3. Chris-Jan Hendriks was second with 103 runs in four innings at an average of 25,8.

The most successful bowler was Leon Furstenburg, taking eight wickets in the nine overs that he had bowled. Morné Olwage and Craig Viljoen each took four wickets, but Morné was more economical, conceding only 32 runs in the four overs that he had bowled.

The next big event of the cricket calendar, is the Limpopo Impala Cricket’s Vhembe T20. This will start on the 2nd of September at the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club when the University of Venda come up against Eltivillas. Louis Trichardt’s side will play against Bochum in the afternoon. The following day, Giyani CC will play against Louis Trichardt in the morning and in the afternoon Bochum will clash with Univen.

The premier and promotional leagues will start on 15 October.
