Masisi Police rescues pangolin

The police in Masisi on Thursday, 11 January, rescued a pangolin that was allegedly destined to be sold on the illegal muti market.

Two suspects were arrested during the animal’s rescue. According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the two men were caught near the Gumbu Village. “The police’s provincial endangered species unit followed up on a tip-off which led them to Gumbu Village where two male suspects were found in possession of a pangolin, attempting to sell it,” said Mojapelo.  

The two men, between the ages of 37 and 42 years, was expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court. In the meantime, the pangolin wat taken into the care of the police’s nature conservation unit who will see to it that it is relocated to a safe place.
