Eleven dead on Vhembe’s roads during Easter

The death of 11 people in the Vhembe District Municipality during the Easter holidays is a worrying issue.

These are the words of concern from Vhembe District Municipality’s executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe. He responded to the statistics released in relation to the accidents and loss of lives that occured during the Easter holidays.

According to the figures, 16 accidents occirred in Vhembe during this time - six happened in Thulamela, five in Makhado, three in Musina and two in the Mutale district. Ten people died in Makhado, six of whom were killed in a gruelling taxi accident along the Makhado-Thohoyandou road,  while one died in Mutale.

Out of these accidents, four people sustained serious injuries in Makhado and Musina respectively, while Thulamela had only one person who was seriously injured.

Thulamela also had 39 people who sustained minor injuries while Makhado had 31, Musina 14 and Mutale had nine.

Matibe hailed the collective effort by the police, emergency officials, traffic officers and firefighters who worked around the clock to make sure that the roads are safe in Vhembe.

He also encouraged all road users, including pedestrians, to adhere to the road rules every day of their lives. “We want our people to understand that road safety measures must be respected at all times.  As a district, we will be happy if there is not a single accident on our roads,” said a very worried Matibe.
