Numerous investment opportunities in region

Date: 26 September 2003 By:

MAKHADO (LOUIS TRICHARDT) – Opportunities for various imports and exports, as well as the establishment of local manufacturing, processing, warehousing and service industries, are reflected in a document compiled by the local municipality in collaboration with local businessmen, farmers and industrialists.

Copies of the document were handed to a Chinese delegation currently visiting the Limpopo Province. In the document, it is emphasised that opportunities exist for the establishment of food processing plants. Very large quantities of all varieties of various tropical and subtropical fruit and citrus are produced within a radius of less than 100km around the town. Other products include vegetables, tomatoes, nuts, beef and venison. This creates excellent opportunities to establish canning and juice extraction and related industries.

The document also reflects opportunities in the general service industry, due to the availability of land, infrastructure and a large workforce, as well as Makhado's relation to South African and other African markets. The lack of facilities, infrastructure and technical knowledge in the neighbouring African states creates excellent opportunities to establish service centres to maintain, service, repair and rebuild electronic and electrical or mechanical equipment, vehicles, machinery and plants. Due to the high cost of these assets in other African states, these items are used for very long service periods, which makes the cost of repair, refurbishing, upgrading and rebuilding a viable option.

The location of the town also renders it ideal for warehousing and distribution of finished, locally manufactured or imported products. It is situated on the N1 highway with direct road, rail and air links to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique. It is situated only 430km from the Maputo harbour and offers excellent opportunities to establish these facilities. This is enhanced by the fact that all available industrial sites have direct, dedicated railway siding facilities available. Excellent investment and export incentives are available from the South African government for foreign investors.

According to the document, large quantities of different fruit varieties produced in the area could also be exported through the international airport situated 100km from the town. It also mentions, amongst others, the potential of products like edible oils, aqua farming (for freshwater fish), a goat farming project, as well as a crocodile, fish and bird venture.
