Emergent cattle farmers show their mettle

Date: 26 September 2003 By:

ELIM - Mr MM Mafune, emergent cattle farmer from M & M Farm at Elim, won the trophy as the Beef farmer of the Year 2003, in a competition, Kaonofatso ya Dikgomo (cattle improvement scheme for emergent farmers) launched by the ARC Animal Improvement Institute (ARC-AII).

Three other groups that qualified as finalists were: Kromspruit Meat Production from Rustenburg (Bafokeng Municipality) Northwest, a consortium of 12 farmers; LRAD (Land Distribution for Agricultural Development Mmaboi 3CT, a consortium of 37 farmers), Matjieskraal, Limpopo, and Georgia Farm, Steilloop, Limpopo. Absa AgriBusiness sponsored the competition, launched for the first time this year by the ARC-AII.

"The object of the project is to encourage as many emergent cattle farmers as possible to participate in livestock improvement schemes, in order to improve their living standards and increase their profitability. It is a serious effort by the ARC and Absa AgriBusiness to encourage and assist emergent farmers to get into the mainstream of commercial farming and existing livestock improvement schemes," says Mr Baldwin Nengovhela, acting programme manager of ARC Resource-Poor Agriculture.

The criteria used to select the finalists were based on their progress towards commercialisation. They received their certificates at the Pretoria International Show.
