Members of the provincial executive committee met with the community at the Lutavha Sports Grounds in Duthuni a fortnight ago.

The delegation was led by MEC Dikeledi Magadze, who acts as premier, and also included Transport MEC Lehlogonolo Masoga, Cogsta MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe, Safety Security and Liaison MEC Joyce Mashamba and Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Merrium Ramadwa.

Mashamba first paid a courtesy visit to one of the senior traditional leaders in Vhembe, Kennedy Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, who is also a member of the provincial executive of the ANC in Limpopo. In conjunction with the Road Agency Limpopo, Magadze handed more than 30 pairs of shoes to needy pupils at Frans Ratshalingwa Secondary School. She also donated schools bags and school dictionaries to the pupils.

At the soccer grounds, the community raised issues such as accommodation for home-based carers, the high number of rape incidents, the tarring of roads to clinics, schools and graveyards. The bridge between Mapate and Lwamondo that had been washed away was of serious concern.

Ntanganedzeni Mulalate, who spoke on-behalf of disabled people, said “many of us are still hidden at home.” He was also concerned about the lack of employment for disabled people and RDP houses that are disabled-friendly.

The youth raised their concerns about the lack of employment, while a member of Sanco expressed concern about the high number of murder cases “that are not progressing. People lost hope in the police. We have no confidence in them as they expose us to the criminals.”

The government was, however, praised for providing houses and electricity in the area, even though it was revealed that some houses are still incomplete.

Mmbangiseni Nemadzivhanani said water was very scarce in the area. Cllr Lucas Manyuha said water challenges would be addressed as soon as technical challenges had been addressed at Nandoni Dam.

MEC Ramadwa said the provision of a clinic depended on the population and the distance from another clinic, while Masoga said the disaster fund would be used to fix all the affected bridges. He also said the provincial government would complete all roads built by municipalities. “We are going to use R19 million to fix potholes in the road from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) to Thohoyandou. The road from Elim to the N1 to Polokwane will be fixed soon. Another R270 million will be used to complete the tarred road from Makuya to Tshikondeni Mine,” Masoga said.
