As she promised in her speech during her inauguration ceremony, Musina Mayor Carol Phiri met the municipal workers on Monday morning, when she helped them in their official duties.

Dressed in a blue work suit, Phiri led her council of 11 members through an unusual programme of helping the municipal fieldworkers in their normal duties of fixing blocked sewerage pipes and cleaning a graveyard.

After unblocking the sewerage pipe, the mayor and her entourage proceeded to the cemetery known as Ha-Mmberegeni, where they helped workers to clean the graveyard.

In appreciation of this gesture, the impressed workers started a song that hailed the mayor and her entourage. In their song, sung in Tshivenda, the workers said it was the first time they had seen a mayor help them in their field work and they appreciated it.

The lead singer also added in her lyrics that the action of the mayor might be a sign of good things to come for the workers, who are always underappreciated. "Maybe the mayor will bring positive changes for us as elderly people who work hard but get little to support our children. Maybe the young mayor will take into consideration that we have children who need our support to go to school."

Phiri later thanked the workers for their commitment and said she had decided to visit them and help them in their work, so that she could identify their challenges. "I was touched to see that our fathers and mothers unblock sewerage drains without protective clothes," she said. She added that she would make sure that the workers got protective clothes as soon as possible.

She also said she would continue to interact with municipal workers in order to make sure that she understood all the challenges they faced in their daily duties.
