Angry bees attack toddler

Date: 10 October 2003 By: Elijar Mushiana-NIPA

VUWANI – Angry bees stung a child and caused a family from Hamutheiwana in Vuwani to vacate their home for two days last week (Wednesday and Thursday). It is alleged that the child, Thendo Muavha (2), provoked the bees by pushing a stick into a hole in a paw paw tree, without knowing that the bees were inside the tree. Within a few seconds, the bees had come out, stinging and swarming onto Thendo's head and shoulders.

The child started screaming and fortunately her grandmother, Mrs Esther Mutavhatsindi, was available to help her granddaughter. Mrs Mutavhatsindi did not waste time in sending Thendo to the nearest clinic, where she was treated for numerous stings all over her body. Thendo's face was so swollen, she could not open her eyes after the attack.

Mrs Mutavhatsindi said that she thanked God and Schielfarm's nurses, who attended to her granddaughter. "I can't believe that Thendo has survived being attacked by the swarm of bees. Two men later removed the bees," she said. "We stayed next door for two days, because of the bees flying all over in my yard." It was also reported last month that a 55-year-old man of Valdezia in Limpopo was stung to death by a swarm of bees when was roofing a hut.
