“I am not a ghost, I am alive” - Mulamu

Date: 08 August 2008 By: Peter Muthambi

“I want to put it straight to the community that I am not a ghost. I am really alive,” said the 51-year-old Joseph Mulamu of Gogobole Village in the Sinthumule area, who had been reported dead by his family in April 2006.

Mulamu, who contacted Mirror with plea for help, said that he only wanted to set the record straight that he is not dead as some people might think. He revealed that it was his family who reported him dead while he was alive and working in Johannesburg. “After hearing the announcement on the radio, saying that I had passed away, I went back home. When I arrived home my family members were busy arranging my funeral. I was shocked to see people running away from me, saying that I was a ghost. My family also told me I was a ghost as well,” he said.

He added: “When I arrived home, the Louis Trichardt Home Affairs had already issued a death certificate confirming that I had passed away”. He indicated to Mirror that the officials at the Louis Trichardt Home Affairs office refused to assist him and keep on telling him that his problem would be solved. “I have a problem that I am not able to receive my pension money, as I was registered dead at Home Affairs. I am pleading with any one who can help me in this regard. My identity document is now useless. Please help me. People think that I am crazy when ever I explain my problem to them,” pleads Mulamu.

The documents in the possession of Mirror indicate that Mulamu passed away on April 6, 2006 and was to be buried on April 15, that year. The provincial spokesman for the Limpopo Home Affairs, Mr Sam Moremi, indicated that Mulamu had to go back to the Louis Trichardt Home Affairs office where the officials will declare that he is alive. “Mulamu’s situation raises a suspicion of some kind. The family members made the mistake of reporting that he had passed away in the first place,” he said.

Moremi said that he was also going to investigate the matter to get the validity of the situation. He pleaded with the community of Limpopo to be sure when registering a person’s death at Home Affairs offices. “People must be sure before coming to Home Affairs,” Moremi added.
