Makhado SAPS in manhunt for rapist

Date: 03 October 2003 By: Nthambeleni Gabara

MAKHADO – The Makhado SAPS has launched a manhunt for three suspects who robbed a 22-year-old victim of R500 and gang-raped his 18-year-old girlfriend at Eltivillas on Sunday (September 21).

According to the Police statement, the couple, who were travelling at about 21:00 from Eltivillas to town, were approached by three unknown thugs, who ordered them to stop. It is alleged that one of the suspects produced a pistol and pointed it at the man and instructed his co-accused to search him. They found his wallet and a bank card. After realising that he did not have any cash in his wallet, they forced him to go with them to the bank, for him to withdraw cash to give them. At the bank, two of the suspects forced the victim to withdraw R500, while the other suspect forced the victim's girlfriend into the bushes where they raped her. While they were still busy raping the girl, a police vehicle approached them, after suspecting that something might be taking place. The three then fled into the bushes.

Insp Daniel Ndlovu, Communication Officer of the Makhado SAPS, said that members of the community must stop walking during the night to avoid being the prey of criminals. At the time of going to press, the three thugs were still at large.
