Outside Makhado Municipality after a bomb threat forced employees to evacuate.

Bomb scare rattles nerves

Date: 19 June 2015 By: Isabel Venter

Employees of the Makhado Municipality had to be evacuated from the municipal building, following a bomb scare last week.

On Thursday, 11 June, the receptionist of the municipality received a telephone call at around 12:30. According to the Makhado police, the call was from a male with “a distinct Afrikaans accent.” The man, said police spokesperson Const Irene Radzilane, was shouting to the receptionist that there were two bombs in the building that were about to explode. The man then ended the telephone call.

Pandemonium erupted, and the whole municipal building was evacuated.

Radzilane confirmed that the police’s dog unit visited the municipality to search for any signs of explosives but could find nothing. The municipality was declared safe again just after 14:00.

It took about another half hour to convince all the employees to re-enter the building.

The employees, crowding together in small groups outside the building, was hesitant to talk about what had transpired, following the threating call.

Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi confirmed that the municipality was giving their full cooperation to the police, who are investigating a case of making a bomb threat.

At the time of our going to press, investigations were still ongoing and no arrests had been made.
