Traffic officials of the Vhembe district will be on full alert this long weekend to ensure a smooth traffic flow.

Communities who attended the Arrive Live Campaign at the Tshisaulu sports grounds on Monday were told to remember those who had died during previous Easter holidays. According to the executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, most of the accidents that occurred on the district's roads were due to driver fatigue, speeding, overtaking on barrier lines and unroadworthy vehicles.

Speaking when launching the Vhembe Easter campaign, Matibe urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, they adhere to the speed limit, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and avoid use of cell phones while driving. He added that Vhembe has a number of tourism destination points which attract many tourists nationally and internationally. He mentioned favourite tourist destinations such as the Kruger National Park and the Mapungubwe world heritage site.

He added that Vhembe is the gateway to most of the African states and the SADC region in particular. Vhembe is home of Beit Bridge, the busiest border gate south of the Sahara. He said the people in the district had the obligation to ensure that there was maximum safety on the roads. He referred to the recent death of Min Collins Chabane and added that almost 14 500 people are dying annually in South Africa as a result of road accidents. Last year, Limpopo recorded 23 fatal accidents during the Easter period.

“This figure is too high. We cannot afford to fold our arms while our people are dying. We have also noticed that some of the accidents are caused by stray animals, particularly on roads which are closer to the villages. We are calling upon all livestock farmers to look after their livestock to avoid unnecessary fatalities,” added Matibe.

Matibe asked the law-enforcement agencies to impound all the livestock found on the roads during the Easter weekend. He appealed to the different communities to cooperate with the police and traffic department.

Throughout the Easter period, several operational centres will be manned in Vhembe. They are situated at Dzindi and Xigalo in Thulamela, the Louis Trichardt four-way stop on the N1, the Mphephu four-way stop, Bokmakierie on the N1 in the Musina area and the Sasol garage at Tshilamba.
