Mayor reshuffles Council’s Exco

Date: 20 March 2015 By: Andries van Zyl

Last week saw a reshuffling of the Makhado Municipality’s executive committee (EXCO) by Mayor David Mutavhatsindi as political head.

The reshuffling comes amidst speculation whether or not Makhado municipal manager Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali will remain in his position as accounting officer. He has taken a leave of absence from work since last week, following what is said to have been two failed attempts on his life since February 21. In the meantime, police investigations into the two incidents where Mutshinyali was confronted by armed men are continuing.

Despite some questions as to what had sparked the sudden reshuffle during a special sitting of the Makhado Municipal Council last Wednesday, the Makhado Municipality stated in a press release immediately after the reshuffling that it was done to improve service delivery in the municipal area. “The Council shifted four of its former members of the executive committee, Cllr T P Mamorobela, Cllr R S Baloyi, Cllr P F Mashimbye and Cllr T G Tshachuyo. The four will remain members of the Council,” municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi stated. He added that the four would continue contributing towards improving service delivery.

The four axed councillors were replaced by Cllrs F J Rikhotso, D Davhana, R Malange and R G Nkanyane. Council’s Ecxo now consists of Mayor Mutavhatsindi as full-time EXCO chairperson, Rikhotso as full-time chairperson  in the portfolio department of corporate services, S M Sinyosi  as full-time portfolio committee chairperson in the technical services department, D T Ratshikuni as full-time portfolio committee chairperson in the development planning department, Davhana as full-time portfolio committee chairperson in the finance department, R Thandavhatu as full-time portfolio committee chairperson in the community services department and Malange as full-time portfolio committee chairperson for sports, arts and culture, as well as part-time portfolio committee chairpersons J P Underwood (disaster, moral regeneration and pastors forum department), R G Nkanyani (gender, women and people living with disabilities department) and A du Plooy (Democratic Alliance).
