Bank robbers gun down security guard

Date: 20 February 2015 By: Isabel Venter

An on-duty security guard was killed during a bank robbery last Thursday in Musina.

The 28-year-old guard was shot twice when three heavily armed robbers opened fire on him and his colleague while they had to retrieve money from the Standard Bank branch. According to provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, the two guards were just leaving the bank with the money trunks, which they were about to load into a waiting security vehicle.

Otto said the robbers waited outside the bank in a getaway vehicle and it is believed that the robbers thought that the guards were being watched and therefore starting shooting.

The second guard was wounded in his leg.

Police pursued the suspects, who fled the scene with the cash trunks, in the direction of Tshipise. Otto said several shots were fired during the wild chase. The robbers, however, managed to elude arrest after they abandoned their vehicle next to the road and fled on foot through the bushes.

At the time of our going to press, no arrests had been made yet.
