A gang of heavily armed thugs invaded the house of an Indian couple on Tuesday evening in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Mr Abhay Desai was praying outside his house in Tamboti Street while his wife, Madvi, was busy inside their home when the calm was shattered by robbers. The robbers forced their way past the couple’s security gate and ambushed Abhay were he was kneeling in prayer at the kitchen door.

He and Madvi were overpowered by the thugs and pushed into the house, where they were tied up and held at gunpoint. The robbers, armed with a pistol and shotgun, threatened to kill the couple. The robbers allegedly demanded valuables and cash and fled when they couldn’t find any. Before they fled, the robbers stole the couple’s cellphones, leaving them tied up.

Abhay managed to free himself and summon help by means of his home’s panic button.

The Makhado police rushed to their aid, but were unable to track down the robbers.

The possibility that the robbers might have been involved in the murder of Abhay’s cousin, Bhavesh Desai, is still being investigated. Bhavesh was killed by an unknown number of attackers at his Wylliespoort home on 5 October.

Police have opened a case of house robbery, and investigations were still ongoing at our time of going to press.
